What is Pilates?

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates almost a century ago. He was inspired by many different disciplines including yoga, dance and martial arts to develop his method. Pilates helps you strengthen your core, correct movement patterns, and increase overall well-being by teaching you to connect your mind and body. It is taught primarily on specialized devices called reformers

What is Reformer Pilates?

If you've never been on a reformer before, you'll be surprised at how intense the workout can get. At the same time it protects your joints. With the combination of adjustable springs and a sliding platform, the Reformer can create resistance or instability (or both) to make exercises easier or more difficult.

What can Reformer Pilates do better than normal Mat Pilates?

The advantage that the reformer has over mat training is that it greatly expands the repertoire of exercises available. The exercises are not only aimed at strengthening and building up the muscles, but are also intended to increase the range of motion. In contrast to mat work, which focuses heavily on the core, i.e. the muscles in the middle of the body, the reformer works with the entire body: the peripheral muscles of the arms and legs are also challenged.

FAQ

Our method combines the principles of the original work from Joseph Pilates (correct physical alignment, center, control, breathing, flowing movement, and concentration) with the refinement and the anatomical understanding of contemporary schools of Pilates. In our studio we are using Balanced Body® equipment (Allegro Reformer).

Individual support for your successful start: Your start will be significantly supported by individual support in the private introductory lesson. This means we can specifically address your needs and previous knowledge and give you a safe and successful start.

Understanding the Basics: Without experience with the Reformer, it is crucial to understand the basic principles and techniques. The private introductory lesson offers you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with how the device works and to perform the basic exercises safely and effectively.

Building trust and comfort: The private session creates a trusting environment in which you can ask any questions and feel safe. This is especially important for mastering the basics and using Reformer Pilates to its full potential.

Holistic analysis of posture and movement: During our time together we analyze your posture and movements. This forms the basis for a Pilates program tailored to you.

Introduction to the key concepts of Reformer Pilates: Together we will walk through essential principles such as breathing techniques, spinal alignment and activation of the 'powerhouse'. These basics form the foundation for your effective Pilates practice.

Practical introduction to the reformer: You will learn how the reformer works and how to operate it, including the spring settings. The private session includes a basic workout with the most important exercises to optimally prepare you for the group classes.

You do not need! You have to learn to walk before you can run! There is no competition in our studio, we want to have fun, let go and be happy. For newcomers there is our introductory package with a private introductory lesson. Our Level 1 Reformer Pilates classes are a great opportunity to learn the basics of Reformer Pilates training. 

We practice barefoot or with (non-slip) socks and comfortable clothing. You can bring your own water bottle (no glass bottles).

During pregnancy, health problems or injuries, you should inform us and of course consult with your doctor to see if Reformer Pilates is currently the right thing for you. We are experienced and well-trained instructors, but we are not doctors or physiotherapists. Please, listen to your body and realize what it needs, only you can! Pain and injury should not occur during your Reformer Pilates practice.

Purajana is a small and cozy studio. Please remember to move around the practice room as carefully and considerately as possible.

Please come fresh (clean feet, clean clothes, no intrusive perfumes) to practice. The teachers and other Pilates Lovers will thank you.

We all practice Reformer Pilates with what we have and are able to do. And also, with what we can’t do and don’t have! Remember, you can take breaks and rest during class at any time. As often and as long as you want! You can also skip entire exercises if they are too demanding. After the class, you should feel good in your own skin and at ease in your heart.

Be grateful for your practice and for this precious time in your hectic day. It is easy to get too busy and distracted to remember to hold that space for yourself and get to a Reformer Pilates class. But when you do get to class, the body’s gratitude, for both the work and the rest, is clear and evident and full of deep breaths, joy and peace.
