Cold chamber Frankfurt – what is that anyway?
The idea of exposing the body to intense cold is nothing new. Quite the opposite: Humans and the cold have always coexisted, and over the course of our evolution, we have developed effective systems for temperature regulation. Thousands of years ago, for example, we were able to survive the iciest storms even without warm clothing and heated homes. However, if these systems are not used regularly, they degrade.
This is where the cold chamber comes in: Our state-of-the-art ice chamber simulates the conditions of that time – taken to the extreme, of course – and offers whole-body cold applications, in which your body is exposed to a dry and easily tolerated cold stimulus at -85°C for around three minutes. This stimulus can help stimulate the body's natural regulatory processes, thus training your body's ability to adapt to different external temperatures. Furthermore, the cold application can stimulate the immune system, as our medical advisor Dr. Matthias Menschel explains.
By the way: Cryotherapy (cold therapy) refers to the targeted use of cold to create specific stimuli that are associated with positive effects on the body and well-being. Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) refers to the brief application of extreme cold to the entire body surface. WBC is a passive, short-term physical therapy with a systemic effect, which is applied in a cold chamber—like ours.
How the cold chamber can affect your body
In addition to the thermoregulation described above, the body may show other reactions to cryotherapy, including:
- Skeletal Muscle: Can support muscular recovery and contribute to general mobility, ideal for supporting the recovery phase.
- Well-being: Can promote subjective well-being and contribute to inner balance.
- Central & Autonomic Nervous System: Can contribute to inner balance, especially in stressful everyday situations.
- Cardiovascular system: Can be perceived as invigorating, especially in conjunction with physical activity.
- Pain perception: Can help modulate pain perception, for example, during recurring stress.
- Joints: Can have a positive effect on your sense of movement, especially during physical exertion or with increasing age.
- Athletic performance: May support protection against oxidative stress, especially during periods of intense physical exertion.
Please be aware that these reactions may occur, but they do not necessarily occur. Please note that no promise of healing or health is made for your visit to our cryogenic chamber, and we do not guarantee or promise relief from any illness.

This is how your session in our ice sauna works
To help you understand how your visit to the cryotherapy chamber near you will work, we'll give you a brief overview here. A session, including preparation, lasts approximately 15 minutes. You won't be alone during this time; someone from our team will always be nearby. If you're bringing a companion, they can support you from a comfortable seating area.
- Booking your session: Register with our booking partner bsport to book your appointment online in our cryotherapy chamber in Frankfurt. Select your desired package and date – and the anticipation can begin!
- Personal consultation: At the beginning of your appointment, we'll calmly discuss your expectations and any concerns and answer any questions you may have. We'll also ensure that nothing stands in the way of your ice-therapy experience (such as contraindications, more on this in the FAQ below) and that the session can be conducted in complete safety.
- Changing: You can change in our private changing room directly in front of the ice sauna. The treatment is more effective the more skin is in contact with the cold. It is therefore best to enter the cryotherapy chamber wearing stockings and a bikini/sports bra, or in underwear or short swimwear. We will also provide you with gloves, a hat, flip-flops, and a face mask. You are welcome to bring your own. It is also important that you do not wear any metal objects directly on your skin (jewelry, watches, rings, glasses, etc.). We recommend not wearing contact lenses while in the cryotherapy chamber. Visible piercings should be removed or covered with tape, as should implants on the surface of the skin. In addition, skin and hair must be completely dry.
- Session: Now you enter the ice chamber and experience the power of the cold for 3 minutes. A blue LED display on the door shows you the remaining time of your cold session, so you always know exactly how long the treatment will last. Breathe calmly and shallowly, and not too deeply at first, as the air is almost twice as dense. You can warm up cold spots on your body by gently placing your hand on them. If you feel unwell, you can of course leave the cold chamber at any time.
- Enjoy: After the session, you'll enjoy the soothing and tingling feeling of freshness and energy. If you like, you can use the measuring device to measure your skin's surface temperature and be amazed at how quickly it warms up again after the ice sauna. Use the refreshing effect as you wish, e.g., for relaxation or sleep, or to start your Reformer Pilates or yoga session with renewed energy.
FAQ about our cold chamber in Frankfurt
How does whole body cold work?
Whole-body cold applications exert a short-term extreme cold stimulus on the entire skin surface, trigger reactions in deeper tissues and organs, lead to adaptation processes in our body with repeated application and in this way contribute to recovery or to the restoration of a homeostatic state.
What kind of cold chamber is used?
For the whole-body cold application, we use the high-performance electric cold chamber cryo:one+ from Mecotec. It is 100% Made in Germany and PED - TÜV certified. Enjoy -85 °C with complete freedom of movement and an unobstructed view through the heated glass door.
Is the ice chamber treatment dangerous and does it hurt?
If there are no contraindications (see next question), your visit to the ice chamber is not dangerous. The session isn't particularly painful either—so a visit to the cryo chamber isn't like an ice bath or an ice-cold shower. The cold stimulus is very dry and only lowers the body's surface temperature. Therefore, you don't have to worry about catching a cold just by visiting the cryo chamber. It doesn't feel as cold in the chamber as you might expect at -85°C.
When am I not allowed to go into the ice sauna?
Whole-body cold application must NOT be used in the following cases; they are considered absolute contraindications:
- untreated hypertension (max 160/100 mm Hg)
- heart attack less than 6 months ago
- decompensated (derailed) diseases of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems
- unstable angina (new or worsening heart pain)
- pacemaker
- peripheral arterial disease (Fontaine stages III and IV)
- acute and past venous thrombosis
- acute febrile respiratory illness
- acute kidney and urinary tract diseases
- severe anemia
- symptoms of cold allergies
- tumor and serious infectious diseases
- widespread bacterial and viral skin infections
- pregnancy
- wound healing disorders
- alcohol and drug influence
For the following indications, cryotherapy may only be used after careful risk-benefit assessment and approval by your doctor; these are considered relative contraindications:
- cardiac arrhythmias
- heart valve defect
- condition following cardiac interventions
- ischemic heart disease (circulatory disorder of the heart muscle)
- Raynaud syndrome (circulatory disorders in fingers and toes)
- polyneuropathy (diseases of the peripheral nervous system
- vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessels)
- claustrophobia
Are there any studies that prove the effectiveness of whole-body cryotherapy?
Although with whole-body cryotherapy, as with many physical therapies, the evidence of studies is difficult to prove by blinding, its worldwide dissemination has ensured a large body of experience with regard to indications. For example, we refer to the recognition of whole-body cold therapy as a treatment method for inflammatory joint diseases and pain syndromes by the German Pension Insurance.
Without claiming to be complete, you will find below a selection of studies on whole-body cryotherapy.
